General

What exactly is Bit Academy?

Bit Academy is a school for software developers. In English we offer three routes: our accredited Dutch HBO Bachelor Software Developer (online), Bit Academy Pro for working professionals, and HBO-recognised bootcamps for career switchers. What all routes share: learning by doing, a personal coach, and a focus on real work instead of exams.

Is Bit Academy officially recognised?

Yes. Our Bachelor is an accredited Dutch HBO degree (CROHO 39172), recognised by the Dutch Ministry of Education. Our bootcamps deliver an HBO-recognised certificate worth 30 EC at Bachelor level. Bit Academy carries the NRTO quality mark and is CRKBO-registered.

Why no classroom teaching?

Because programming is something you do, not something you hear. Watching videos doesn't make you a developer, just as watching piano doesn't make you a pianist. From day one you work on concrete exercises and projects, with a coach who steps in at the right moment. Read our take in the Manifesto.

Who is Bit Academy for?

For anyone serious about becoming a developer. From career switchers to international students looking for a Dutch Bachelor's taught in a way that actually sticks. What unites our students: a drive to build, curiosity, persistence. Prior programming experience is not required on almost any route.

Dutch Accredited Bachelor

What Bachelor's does Bit Academy offer in English?

An accredited four-year Dutch HBO Bachelor Software Developer, delivered 100% online, taught in English. Same officially recognised degree as the Dutch Bachelor, designed for international students and working professionals who need flexibility.

What's the difference from a bootcamp?

A Bachelor is a full, multi-year study that ends with a recognised Bachelor-level diploma. A bootcamp is an intensive, short programme (6–12 months) that ends with an HBO-recognised certificate. The bootcamp is ideal if you want to be practically employable fast; the Bachelor is ideal if you want the full Bachelor recognition and have time for four years of study.

What are the admission requirements?

Bachelor Online: you pass our admission test, are at least 21 and meet language requirements (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent). HBO Deeltijd (Dutch part-time track): an MBO-4 SD diploma gives direct admission; without one the same admission test, age and language requirements apply, plus a suitable work or internship placement in tech. For international students we accept equivalent qualifications. Contact us for a case-by-case assessment. No programming experience required.

What does the Bachelor cost?

Tuition fees are reviewed each academic year. We share the current pricing and any payment options during your intake. Always check the most recent rates and conditions before signing up. Employers often co-finance through training or development budgets.

Can I follow the Bachelor from anywhere?

Yes. The Bachelor Online is 100% remote. You have periodic 1-on-1 check-ins with a personal study coach and join an online community. There's no need to be physically at a Bit Academy location to complete your Bachelor's.

When does the Bachelor start?

The Bachelor Online runs in cohorts. The next start date is confirmed during your intake. See the Bachelor page for current information. Spots per cohort are limited.

Bit Academy Pro

What is Bit Academy Pro?

Pro is our online training offering for working professionals. Tracks include Full Stack Web Developer, Frontend Web Developer, Backend Web Developer, Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, ChatGPT Expert and Laravel Developer. You work at your own pace through hands-on exercises, with personal coaching and a recognised Pro certificate at the end.

What's the difference from standalone online courses?

Three things: 1) You follow one coherent track with a clear end goal, not scattered tutorials. 2) You get a coach who gives feedback on what you actually write. 3) You finish with a recognised Pro certificate and a portfolio you can show in job interviews.

How long does a Pro track take?

Indicatively 15 to 24 months at your own pace, depending on your starting level and how many hours you can invest each week. Your coach helps you plan a realistic route alongside work and other commitments.

What does Pro cost?

Pricing is reviewed periodically. During your intake we discuss the current price, any payment options and possible employer co-financing. Always check the most recent rates and terms before signing up.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. You receive a recognised Bit Academy Pro certificate plus the portfolio of projects you built. This isn't an accredited Bachelor's diploma (for that, pick the Bachelor or a bootcamp with HBO-recognised certificate), but it's a solid document for employers.

Bootcamps

Which bootcamps are there?

Three bootcamps: Full Stack Developer, Data Engineer and Cybersecurity. All 100% remote, 6 to 12 months at your own pace, intensive (32+ hours per week). All ending with an HBO-recognised certificate.

Who is the bootcamp for?

For career switchers serious about moving into tech. You don't need programming experience, but you do need analytical thinking and the willingness to invest 32+ hours per week. Many of our bootcamp students come from hospitality, healthcare, education, logistics or a different first career.

Can I do a bootcamp alongside a job?

We advise against it. A bootcamp asks for full-time commitment. Working alongside your studies can work (an 8-hour-a-week side job), but a full-time job doesn't combine well with the pace. Want to learn next to your job? Choose Bit Academy Pro.

Will I get help finding a job after the bootcamp?

Yes. You finish with a final project that goes into your portfolio, and we connect you to our employer network (ING, Schiphol, Transavia, NS, Philips, Vattenfall and smaller scale-ups). No job guarantees. But active support, a coach who thinks along, and an alumni network that shares openings.

What does a bootcamp cost?

From €5,280 one-off (discounted rate), or €6,000 across 6 instalments of €1,000. The bootcamp delivers 30 EC at Bachelor level and an HBO-recognised certificate. For career switchers there are often financing options via UWV (Dutch employment agency), your municipality, or the training budget of your (former) employer.

Admissions & applying

Do I need to know how to program to start?

No. For our Bachelor, Pro and bootcamps no programming experience is required. What we do value: analytical thinking, persistence and curiosity. We test for that in the introduction call and (for the Bachelor) in a short intake assignment.

Am I too old to switch careers?

Our students range from 17 to 55. The average bootcamp student is 31. Programming asks for logical thinking, persistence and curiosity. None of which have an expiry date.

I'm bad at maths, can I program?

Yes. Programming is about breaking problems down and solving them, not about arithmetic. You don't need advanced maths. Basic numeracy and abstract thinking help, but we train those during the programme.

How does the introduction call go?

A no-obligation call of 30–45 minutes, in person or online. We discuss your background, why you want to switch, and which route fits best. No sales pitch. We give honest advice, even if that means another school is a better start.

Costs & financing

What does a programme cost?

Depends on the route. Tuition for the Bachelor, Pro and bootcamps is reviewed each academic year or period. We share the current pricing and payment options during your intake. Always check the most recent rates and terms before signing up.

Can my employer co-finance?

Yes, this is common for Bit Academy Pro, the Bachelor and sometimes bootcamps. On request we deliver a business quote, reasoning and proof for the training budget or relevant Dutch subsidy schemes. Send your question to info@bit-academy.nl.

Are there government grants or subsidies?

For the Bachelor you can apply for Dutch DUO student financing (depends on your personal situation). For bootcamps and Pro there's no DUO, but there are sometimes municipal or UWV schemes for career switchers. Check your situation with our study advisors.

What if I stop?

For Pro you cancel monthly. For the Bachelor the terms of your education agreement with Bit Academy apply. For bootcamps a specific cancellation policy applies. We're clear and fair about this before you sign.

Locations & online

Which locations does Bit Academy have?

Three physical campuses in the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Purmerend and Groningen. Pro, Bachelor Online and bootcamps are 100% remote.

Can I visit?

Please do. Each location has open days (several per year) and you can come by appointment too. Book a visit via info@bit-academy.nl.

What's possible 100% online?

Bit Academy Pro and the Bachelor Online. Both fully remote, with periodic coach contact and an active online community.

Coaching & support

How much coach contact do I have?

Periodic 1-on-1 check-ins with your personal coach. Plus community support, contact with fellow students and answers to questions during office hours. Stuck on an assignment? Someone always jumps in.

Who are the coaches?

Developers, data engineers and security specialists with experience from industry, not career academics. Many of our coaches also work (part-time) as consultants or developers, so they know what's actually asked for on the job.

Do I work in a group?

Yes. You move at your own pace, but you're part of a cohort. You work on team assignments, do code reviews, and build a network. Learning alone doesn't work. Learning together does.

Practical matters

What laptop do I need?

Windows 11, macOS 12+ or Linux. At least 16 GB RAM, an SSD, and a good internet connection. Don't have a laptop, ask us. We often find a solution.

Do I need to install software in advance?

No. The first modules walk you step by step through installing what you need (editor, Git, runtimes) on any OS.

Do I get a portfolio?

Yes. Every route ends with at least three of your own projects, live on GitHub. Including code review by a coach. That portfolio is what employers ask for, and what you show in job interviews.

What contact is there with employers?

Our partner employers are structurally part of our network for internships and vacancies. Think ING, Schiphol, Transavia, NS, Philips, Vattenfall and smaller scale-ups. Depending on route and performance we connect you proactively.

My question isn't listed.

Send us a message at info@bit-academy.nl or book an introduction call. We usually respond within one working day.

Still in doubt?

Compare all routes side by side, or book a 30-minute guidance call. No sales pitch. If another school is a better fit, we'll say so.
