Back-end Developer Course
Want to become a Back-end Developer? Bit Academy offers a specialised Pro Backend route, Pro Laravel Developer for the Laravel ecosystem, and the broader Full Stack Bootcamp for those who want both sides.
Which route fits you?
Bit Academy offers different track types. For each route below you'll see who it's for, how long it takes and what certificate or diploma you receive.
Pro · Typically 15–24 months
Pro Backend Web Developer
Specialised Pro route in back-end work: PHP fundamentals, API design, databases, auth/security and deployment. Three final projects plus a recognised Pro certificate.
Pro · Typically 15–24 months
Pro Laravel Developer
Pro route focused on the Laravel ecosystem: Eloquent, Livewire, queues and production deploys. Recognised Pro certificate.
Bootcamp · 6–12 months
Full Stack Developer Bootcamp
Intensive Bootcamp covering back-end (Laravel, SQL) and front-end (React). HBO-recognised certificate (30 EC), including placement.
Which situation matches yours?
Back-end specialist
You know you don't want to work on UI but on APIs, databases and infrastructure. Pro Backend goes deeper than a full-stack route can.
Laravel worker or switcher
You already work with PHP/Laravel or want to. The Dutch market asks for many Laravel developers at agencies and scale-ups. Pick Pro Laravel Developer.
Broader profile in a year
You want to study full time and not choose between front-end and back-end. The Full Stack Bootcamp covers both in 6–12 months.
Working professional moving into back-end
You already work in tech (sysadmin, support, ops) and want to become a developer. Pro Backend suits people moving forward who need self-paced study.
What does a Back-end Developer do?
A Back-end Developer builds the logic users don't see directly: APIs, databases, authentication, business rules, integrations with other systems. The work is about reliability, performance and security. A good back-end keeps running for years without users noticing.
In practice you work with a server-side language (Bit Academy teaches PHP/Laravel; Python, Node, Go and C# are also common in the market), a database (usually SQL), and modern tooling for deployment and monitoring. Senior back-end developers design architectures that scale to thousands or millions of requests per minute.
What skills will you learn?
Pro Backend teaches you: modern PHP and algorithm fundamentals, REST API design with validation and documentation, databases (SQL and NoSQL) at production level, authentication and security (OWASP Top 10), and deployment with Docker and CI/CD.
Pro Laravel Developer goes deeper on the Laravel ecosystem: Eloquent, Sanctum, Livewire, queues and production deploys to Forge or Vapor. Pick this route if you want to specifically work in PHP/Laravel. The Full Stack Bootcamp also covers back-end, combined with front-end and at a full-time pace.
Specialist or full stack?
Back-end specialists are sought by scale-ups, fintech, enterprise IT and e-commerce. Full-stack developers fit smaller teams that support the whole product.
Junior developers often find a first job more easily as full stack thanks to broader hireability. Specialisation toward back-end can come later. The trade-off is real for back-end-specific roles (DevOps, platform engineer, API architect) — early specialisation saves time.
Pro, Bootcamp and HBO are not the same
Each track type has its own proposition. Below you'll see what each one stands for.
Pro
Online, alongside your job, self-paced. Typically 15–24 months, €59.99/month. Choose Pro Backend (broader) or Pro Laravel (more targeted).
Bootcamp
Full time, 32+ hours/week, 6–12 months. HBO-recognised certificate (30 EC), placement included. Covers front-end and back-end — broader than specialisation.

Answers to common questions
Pro Backend or Pro Laravel: what's the difference?
Pro Backend is broader: you learn PHP fundamentals, general API principles, databases and deployment. Pro Laravel is more targeted: deep into the Laravel ecosystem (Eloquent, Sanctum, Livewire). Working in a Laravel shop? Pick Laravel. Want broader hireability? Pick Backend.
Which language will I learn?
Bit Academy teaches back-end with PHP and Laravel. The principles (REST, databases, security) transfer to Python, Node.js, Go or C#. The market asks for a lot of PHP/Laravel work in the Netherlands, alongside Java and .NET in enterprise environments.
Do I need maths?
No advanced maths, but logical thinking. Algorithms and data structures appear, at an applied level — not academic theory.
Can I do this alongside a job?
Yes, the Pro route is designed for that. Self-paced, online, work on modules when it suits you. The Bootcamp requires full-time availability (32+ hours/week).
Is this recognised?
The Bootcamp delivers an HBO-recognised certificate (30 EC). Pro Backend and Pro Laravel end in a recognised Pro certificate plus a portfolio. For a full HBO bachelor see Software Engineering.
